Whatever time of year, travelers are constantly taking photos of the Mackinac Bridge. It’s that popularity that has made it the tourist attraction in Michigan most often mentioned on Instagram, according to online travel agent TravelBird.
In the TravelBird ranking, the Mackinac Bridge is the top tourist destination in Michigan noted in postings on the photo-sharing social media site Instagram, followed by the Henry Ford Museum. The Mackinac Bridge was ranked No. 64 in the U.S. by the same measure, and No. 160 worldwide, with 30,900 mentions.
“Instagram is one of the most popular ways for people to share photos of their travels,” said Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) Chairman William Gnodtke. “It’s a thrill for us to know that the iconic Mackinac Bridge is getting so much attention on social media not only here in Michigan, but across the country and beyond.”
TravelBird explained why it created the ranking using the number of hashtagged mentions referencing tourism attractions: “Instagram is a barometer of where Millennials are travelling to. By using common hashtags of popular sights, monuments and attractions, we created a rank of the most hashtagged destinations in the US and around the world.”
