MacPass Frequently Asked Questions Printable PDF
1. What is a MacPass, and why would I want one?
MacPass is the Mackinac Bridge Authority’s exclusive toll-account program, which uses windshield-mounted stickers to keep customers rolling with the quickest and easiest toll payment. MacPass is a pre-paid debit account that does not expire, and you can take as few or as many trips per year as you’d like; just reload funds onto your account when your balance gets low. You can also add as many vehicles to your account as you need. MacPass customers can use any “OPEN” lane, or a “MACPASS” lane when they are open during non-peak traffic times.
Though the MacPass is not exclusively for commuters, MacPass holders with passenger vehicles (not towing a trailer) qualify for the commuter discount if they make both a northbound and southbound trip within 36 hours. The toll will be $4 for the first trip and $0 for the return trip. The same tag must be used on the same vehicle for both trips to receive the discount.
2. Do I need to stop at the toll booth if using a MacPass tag?
You do not have to come to a complete stop at the toll booth, but there will still be a gate that goes up once your tag is read by the antennae.
3. Do I need a MacPass tag for each vehicle?
You must have a MacPass tag for each vehicle. MacPass tags are required per the user agreement to be placed on the inside of your windshield just below the rear-view mirror or otherwise determined by MBA staff. You may also refer to your owner’s manual for the best location to install an RFID tag on the inside of your windshield for your vehicle year and model. Each MacPass is assigned to one vehicle and must not be moved from one vehicle to another.
You can have multiple tags on your account, but you will be required to enter individual vehicle information for each MacPass tag.
4. Can I get a MacPass tag for my motorcycle?
Yes, the Mackinac Bridge has a different tag available to go on motorcycle windshields. They are for exterior use. If your motorcycle does not have a windshield, the clear motorcycle tag is also meant to work on the headlights.
5. I sometimes pull a camper or trailer with my vehicle. Can I still use my MacPass tag or a MacPass lane?
Your MacPass tag can be used when pulling a camper or trailer but doing so will void any discount. Note: Prior to leaving the lane the Patron Fare Display will show that your account was charged $4.00. Once you pass through the lane, your axles are counted, and your account will be charged for the actual number of axles counted.
6. How can I open a MacPass account?
