MACKINAC BRIDGE PROJECTS

Electrical Upgrade

2007 THROUGH 2011

In mid-April, the Mackinac Bridge Authority begins our general maintenance and painting programs. In addition, contractors are hired to work on projects on the bridge and our grounds.

Bridge repainting project

Complete paint removal and reapplication of primer and surface paint.

TIME FRAME	Ongoing all season for years 2008-2011.
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Area lane closures Monday through Friday. Some overnight closures. Weekend lane closures as traffic levels permit.

Bridge deck resurfacing

Mill off old bituminous and replace.

TIME FRAME	Spring of 2008.
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Traffic switch with two way traffic. Possible delays northbound on Fridays and southbound on Sundays.

Catwalk improvements

Install maintenance catwalks along perimeter of truss approaches.

TIME FRAME	Ongoing all season during summer of 2009-2010.
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Daytime and some overnight lane closures Monday through Friday. Weekend lane closures as traffic levels permit.

Main cable inspection

Thoroughly inspect sections of the main cables near the top of the towers.

TIME FRAME	During the month of July in 2008.
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Area lane closures Monday through Friday. Temporary traffic stoppages of 20 minutes or less.

Deck grating replacement

Remove and replace sections of open grating on the suspended spans.

TIME FRAME	Spring and Fall of 2007-2011.
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Day and night time lane closures Monday through Friday.

Causeway resurfacing

Mill and replace the bituminous surface on the causeway.

TIME FRAME	Spring of 2010
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Traffic switch with two way traffic. No weekend lane closures.

Tower hanger replacement

Remove and replace the tower links.

TIME FRAME	2010-2011
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Traffic switch with two way traffic

Viaduct bearing replacement

Remove and replace the bearings on the 13 south viaduct spans.

TIME FRAME	Ongoing all season during summer of 2007.
TRAFFIC DELAYS	Day and night lane closures all week.
